Assessing your skills is one of the first things you need to do when you begin a job search. These skills can be separated into three categories.
Types of Skills
Job Content: Those skills shich are specific to a job, i.e. Javascript, C+ Networking, Operate mobile x-ray equipment.
Transferable Skills: Skills which can transfer from one job to another, i.e. Proficient in Microsoft Office Software, General Clerical Work, Excellent Presenter.
Self-Management Skills: Sometimes these are called personality traits or abilities, i.e. Enthusiastic, Team Player, Good Communicator. For further list open the Personality and Attitudinal Trait List provided. This list will give you some great options for your resume.
Since it is unlikely that you will find a position that is identical to your previous job, it is critical to carefully evaluate how your skills transfer into other opportunites and include them on you list of possiblities.
Your Task: Visit Career Infonet's site to do a skills assessment. Click on Use the Skills Profiler to create a list of your skills and match them to job types that need those skills. You can use this profile to explore possible occupations, find gaps you need to fill, or to create a resume. When your skills profile is complete, you can print it, or save it as a Microsoft Word, HTML or XML file, or as a Bookmark in your browsers. Your facilitator may ask your for the completed task. |
